My daughters good friend (after seeing my website...) asked if I'd make her a birdhouse for her grandma for a Christmas present. Her Grandma lives in a farming community in the Pemberton Valley. Right away I had a vision of what I wanted to do for her. What I thought of and how long I thought it would take were way off (as usual...) but I couldn't resist doing this for her as I love this girl and was happy to make something special for her Grandma... (like, who doesn't LOVE their Grandma...)
This was the process.
I knew I wanted a "porch" area and a sloped roof style house, so this was the beginning. The base and the basic starting point.

I wanted a "barn style" door and she wanted two entrances. The house was to be decorative only, as she wanted it on the porch railing. I thought it would be cute to have the second entrance be covered by a barn style shutter. Little did I realize how much time it would take to make the "barn doors" , but in the end I was really happy with the result.
All I can say is she's lucky I love her - it was a lot more work than I thought - but I am so excited for the finished product

surprise - it opens!!!!
The second 'entrance' she wanted and still keeps the rustic integrity I wanted too

Did I mention I wanted it to be a log cabin?
Opps
well, I did and am really happy so far with how things are going. There have been MANY tweaks along the way, but I can't wait to see it finished myself!
At this point, I am about 4 hours in....
I know, doesn't look like it takes that much time, but indeed, it does...
You have to remember, I have to go cut branches from trees in the backyard, and cut them in half and get them all cut to size for the siding - didn't get started until afternoon and then had to stop due to lack of light to go cut more branches....
Plus, the bloody barn doors took a LONG time to make!!!
It should be all downhill from here..... (I say that sooooo easily...)

No porch is complete without a railing...
Added a door handle, you know, so the birds can get in...
And a step.
Just have to put the roof on and voila - my first log cabin bird house!
